The Importance of ISA-101 in HMI Design
In industrial automation, HMI design must prioritize operator situational awareness and safety over aesthetic appeal. Standards like ISA-101 govern the layout and color philosophies, aiming to reduce cognitive load and prevent operational errors.
Standard HMI Color Conventions
Colors should be used sparingly. The goal is to keep “normal” operational states visually neutral so that abnormal conditions, like alarms, stand out instantly.
- Background: Use neutral grays (e.g., #333333) instead of pure black to prevent eye strain and glare.
- Running/ON: Standardized to Green in most non-process industries, indicating active states.
- Stopped/OFF: Standardized to Red or dark gray depending on the specific plant style guide.
- Alarms: Reserve bright, saturated colors like intense Red or Yellow exclusively for alarms and critical trips.
Optimizing Contrast for Accessibility
Excessive contrast can cause fatigue, while poor contrast obscures critical data. Implement a minimum luminance contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for text against backgrounds, aligning with WCAG guidelines. Moreover, never rely on color alone; always incorporate shapes and text to accommodate color blindness among operators.
