What is Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)?
Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is a gold-standard manufacturing metric used to evaluate how efficiently a production operation is being utilized. It identifies the percentage of manufacturing time that is truly productive. An OEE score of 100% means you are manufacturing only good parts, as fast as possible, with no stop time.
The OEE Formula
OEE is calculated by multiplying three core factors:
OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality
The Three Components of OEE
1. Availability
Availability measures the percentage of scheduled time that the equipment is actually running and producing parts. It accounts for downtime losses such as equipment failures, material shortages, and setup/changeover time.
Formula: Availability = Run Time / Planned Production Time
2. Performance
Performance measures how fast the equipment is operating compared to its designed maximum speed (the ideal cycle time). It accounts for speed losses, such as minor stops, idling, or reduced operating speeds due to wear or operator inefficiency.
Formula: Performance = (Ideal Cycle Time × Total Count) / Run Time
3. Quality
Quality measures the percentage of “good” parts produced compared to the total number of parts started. It accounts for quality losses, including scrapped parts and parts that require rework.
Formula: Quality = Good Count / Total Count
How to Calculate OEE Step-by-Step
- Determine Planned Production Time: Calculate the total time the equipment is scheduled to run, excluding planned breaks or non-working shifts.
- Calculate Availability: Divide the actual run time by the planned production time.
- Calculate Performance: Compare the actual production rate to the ideal cycle time.
- Calculate Quality: Determine the ratio of defect-free products to total production.
- Multiply the Factors: Multiply Availability, Performance, and Quality to get your final OEE percentage.
