Machine Vision Network Requirements

GigE Vision cameras are a staple in industrial quality control and automation. Estimating their network bandwidth is critical to avoid packet loss, dropped frames, and system bottlenecks, especially when multiple cameras share the same network infrastructure.

The Bandwidth Calculation Formula

The raw bandwidth needed for a camera stream is dictated by its resolution, speed, and pixel format:

Bandwidth (bits/s) = Width (px) × Height (px) × Frame Rate (fps) × Bit Depth

For example, a 1600×1200 pixel camera running at 60 fps in 8-bit monochrome requires approximately 921.6 Mbps of bandwidth.

Optimizing GigE Vision Performance

  • Jumbo Frames: Enable Jumbo Frames (typically 9000 bytes) on your NIC and network switches. This drastically reduces the number of packets and protocol overhead, improving throughput efficiency.
  • Inter-Packet Delay: If a camera is saturating the link, use the Inter-Packet Delay (GevSCPD) setting to throttle data output, smoothing out network bursts.
  • Dedicated Infrastructure: Never share a vision network switch with general IT traffic. Utilize dedicated NICs and managed switches with QoS (Quality of Service) to prioritize image data and ensure real-time inspection reliability.
